The Shop - Description of Work 100109 Th

Blood, sweat, skin, and the loss of a little leg hair...

The result of a temporary lack of focus and full commitment to the task at hand.
Luckily, this time I was only doing box jumps.

The question was asked recently "Can you describe what is involved in the workouts you do at The Shop?" So, in an effort to describe something that can not fully be explained with words and must be experienced multiple times to be fully understood, here's the start of an answer...

Workouts are typically done in some sort of circuit format and consist of a various mixture of movement types including, but not limited to: Sprinting, jumping, lifting, running, carrying, dragging, and throwing.

Some of the movements are done with nothing more than a persons bodyweight and include: situps, pushups, squats, dips, box jumps, and pullups.
Other parts of the workouts involve weight and include: Olympic lifts with barbells and rubber or metal weights, medicine balls, dumbbells, kettlebells, and other misc. strengthening tools.
We also incorporate unconventional items like large logs, tractor tires, kegs, and ropes for pulling, dragging, or climbing.

Work is done while under stress and fatigue, often at high speeds, and at loads varying from relatively light to near maximal. Focus and an intimate knowledge of ones abilities and surroundings is required at all times to help eliminate the chance of accident or injury.

Through hard work, risk, and dedication we change ourselves by strengthening the physical aspects of our body. That's the obvious part, but maybe a more important and usable outcome of what we do is the strengthening of our resolve, will, and determination. The kind of mental toughness and strength that can only be gained thru self inflicted pain and the willingness and desire to go where your body and mind are telling you not to.

Post any additional answers to the above question along with any thoughts and description of what it is that we do here.

  1. What we do in the shop is get funny looks for running with wooden posts on our shoulders. Run for miles and end up in the same location. Pull our weight up ropes that most people use as handrails. Jump in the air and clap for no apparant reason and then drop to the floor and push ourselves up to do it once more. Drag hundreds of pounds accross the floor. Row for hours, even though we are miles away from water. We curse the names of crossfit girls, and then we crave the opportunity to meet her again. We create our workouts based on the knowledge of others and through our own experiences. We expose our weaknesses and then mold them into strengths. We prepare for the future. We live. We believe.
